Edmonton teen a rising star in country
music
By Kevin Maimann, Examiner staff,
December 30, 2010
Kayla Patrick has received many accolades
in her career as a country singer. Over the past seven years, the Edmontonian has won talent shows, released two
albums, and played to a crowd of 16,000 at Rexall Place.
In 2007, she was dubbed Female Entertainer of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year, and Female Songwriter of the
Year by the North American Country Music Association at an international competition in Tennessee.
Oh, right – and she's 14 years old.
Patrick will perform on the CBC Centre Stage in City Centre Mall during the New Year's Eve Downtown 2010 celebration
Friday night.
"I started singing around the house at age three, but I started singing in competitions when I was seven,"
Patrick says. "Ever since then, I've been performing around Alberta at my own shows, and at fundraisers and
lots of other events."
Patrick developed an interest in music through her father, who is also a musician. She attributes her early success
to extensive practising and sheer love of music.
"I play guitar every single day. I can't go a day without it. If I'm in love with a song, I just keep playing
it. That's kind of how I practice," she says. "It's not really scheduled, it's just kind of when I want
to ... which is all the time."
Patrick's latest album, I'm Your Biggest Fan, contains five classic country covers and seven originals, including
the title track and Done by Sundown.
For her next album, the prolific songwriter plans to record all originals, and says she may branch out into folkier
and jazzier territory. She cites influences as Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood and John Mayer.
"My next album, I'd like to co-produce and try to make it a bit more my own," she says.
Patrick has been playing for people waiting for flights at the Edmonton International Airport this holiday season,
as part of an initiative by local non-profit U22 productions, which mentors and promotes young musicians.
Patrick has become somewhat of a rock star at Kenilworth junior high school, where she still manages to find the
time to earn straight-As and play volleyball. "At the talent show, people asked me for my autograph, and at
the end of the year, everyone was asking me to sign their yearbook because they're like, 'You're going to be famous,'
" she says with a laugh.
U22-sponsored artists The Command Sisters and Ky Babyn will also play the CBC Centre Stage Friday night. Patrick
will take the stage at 10 p.m.

"Every once in while an artist comes into Homestead Recorders that is truly special. When Kayla first played and sang her songs for me I was blown
away... How can someone so young command a voice like that; mature beyond her years... She's amazing and she writes
and sings about being 14 years old -- She's the real deal....I love her CD and I'm very proud of work we've done
together. I am her "Biggest Fan"...
